LANDSCAPING & GARDEN CARE IN IBIZA & MALLORCA

Mediterranean gardens that look their best when they are needed most

The garden of a Balearic villa is one of its most visible assets. It is the first thing guests see on arrival, it surrounds the pool where most of the holiday is spent, and it defines whether the property feels well kept or neglected from the moment the gate opens. The Solutioner's villa management programme across the Balearic Islands includes a structured landscaping and garden care service, and this guide describes how it operates through the year.

The Mediterranean Gardening Year

A Balearic garden does not work on the same calendar as a northern European one. The major growth happens between February and June, before the heat slows everything down. The dormant period is high summer, when watering becomes the central task and almost nothing else thrives. A second, gentler growth period runs from September through November, followed by a relatively quiet winter when pruning, soil work, and planting of dormant stock take place.

A garden team that understands this cycle treats the year as a sequence of distinct phases rather than a uniform programme of mowing and edging. See also our guide to the overall property management offering on the islands.

Native Planting and Water Use

The most resilient Balearic gardens are built around plants that belong to the climate. Olive, fig, almond, carob, oleander, bougainvillea, rosemary, lavender, agave, and the various Mediterranean grasses can thrive on relatively little water once established. Lawns of cool-climate grass species, by contrast, require enormous irrigation and rarely look healthy by August.

When the Solutioner team takes over a garden, we often suggest gradual changes that reduce water use, improve resilience, and produce a garden that looks better in August than its predecessor did. Drip irrigation, well-zoned to match plant needs, is part of every well-managed property. More on the practical operations is in the guide to comprehensive year-round upkeep of Balearic homes.

Scheduling Around Guest Stays

Garden work is timed to be invisible to guests. The major pruning and planting happens out of season. During occupation, the team visits at carefully chosen times, usually early morning before guests are up, and the work is finished before the day starts. The aim is that the garden looks beautifully kept without anyone hearing a strimmer.

Lighting, Furniture, and Hardscape

A complete garden service goes beyond planting. Outdoor lighting that highlights the trees and architecture at night. Garden furniture that is cleaned, treated, and protected during winter. Stone paths, terraces, and walls that are pressure-washed and resealed periodically. Outdoor showers that are kept in good working order. All of this is part of how a property keeps the standard that owners and guests expect. The team can also coordinate the technical care of the pool that sits within the garden alongside the elements covered here.
