SAILING YACHT CHARTER IN IBIZA & MALLORCA

The quieter, more elemental way to spend a day or a week on the Balearic Sea

A sailing yacht is a different experience to a motor yacht in almost every respect. The pace is slower, the soundscape is the wind and the water rather than the engine, the relationship with the sea is more direct, and the day arranges itself around the conditions rather than against them. The Solutioner's private transport and charter service for the Balearics includes a dedicated sailing programme, and this guide explains how it compares to the more commonly booked motor charter.

Mono-Hull or Catamaran

A sailing charter starts with a fundamental choice between a single-hull yacht and a catamaran. A mono-hull sails more dynamically, heels with the wind, and gives the more traditional sailing feel. A catamaran is more stable, has more deck space for sunbathing and lounging, and is more comfortable for groups that include children or guests who are new to sailing. Both are widely available in the Balearic charter fleet.

For day charters, a catamaran is often the better choice for groups who want to swim from the boat and spend most of the day at anchor. For longer trips, the choice depends on the priorities of the group. See also our guide on the wider yacht charter landscape on the islands.

Day Sailing

A day under sail typically departs from one of the marinas around eleven in the morning and returns at sunset. The route depends on the wind, but the Balearic prevailing pattern usually allows a comfortable sail to a chosen cove, a long lunch at anchor, an afternoon of swimming and snorkelling, and a sail back along the coast as the light softens. The skipper handles the sailing, and guests can be as involved or as detached as they like.

Catering on board ranges from a simple cold lunch hamper to a chef-prepared menu served at anchor. More on how the food side is arranged is in our guide to chef-prepared meals at the villa or on the water.

Multi-Day Sailing Itineraries

For guests who want a longer experience, a sailing charter of three to seven days can take a small group around Ibiza and Formentera, across to the Mallorca coast, or up through the smaller islets of the Cabrera National Park. The pace is genuinely different to a motor charter. Distances feel longer, anchorages feel earned, and the rhythm of the trip is determined by light and weather rather than schedule.

Crewed or Skippered

A full charter usually includes a skipper and a hostess or chef as a minimum. Larger sailing yachts carry a full crew of three to six. For guests with their own sailing experience, a bareboat charter is possible on certain vessels and with the appropriate licences, though most clients prefer to let the crew run the boat while they relax. The team can also coordinate water sports equipment carried on board alongside the elements covered here.
